Books in Boxes
A wonderful resource brought to you by the Children’s Library. Books in Boxes ensures that everyone in your group or classroom has a copy of the book being read. Books in Boxes provides 35 copies of one book for use in your classroom, or reading group. Lists of titles are arranged by author, title, and subject. Reservations are required, please call the Children’s Reading Room to reserve sets.
Big Books
Oversized picture books from pre-school through primary grades. Check out the database to see what classic children’s tales are available in giant sizes for your use!
Kits for Kids
A unique resource provided by the Children’s Library. Kits for Kids are bags filled with a variety of books, activities, and more. This little bag of tricks is organized around a specific theme, with six books, activity sheets, CD’s or DVD’s, and pieces to play and learn with.

Provides an online puzzlemaker and lesson plan library.
EDSITEment
Provides a database of lesson plans searchable by grade level, subject, keyword, and subcategory.
Family History for Kids and Teens
A downloadable resource developed by the Special Collections department that provides information on helping kids get started in geneology. Covers popular topics such as oral history, family cookbooks, journals, and scrapbooking.
Institute for Library and Information Professionals
Provides lesson plans, pathfinders, ODE checklists, and an online information literacy assessment tool that was developed using sixth and ninth grade Ohio standards. Also provides spreadsheets of books searchable by grade level and content standard.
Kathy Schrock’s Internet Guide Resources for Educators
Provides downloadable series of evaluation surveys, one each at the elementary, middle, and secondary school levels to help students learn how to critically evaluate web information.
KIDiddles
A children’s music database that provides printable sheet music, lyrics, and audio. Searchable by keyword, subject, or browsing the index.
Learning Express Library
Provides completely interactive online practice tests and tutorial courses designed to help students succeed on academic or licensing tests, including the ACT, SAT, ASVAB, GED, GRE, GMAT, LSAT, AP courses, PRAXIS, and civil service exams. Also included are a number of skills improvement sections which are particularly helpful to school aged children.
Meet Me at the Corner
Provides kid-friendly educational videos that offer virtual field trips for kids taking kids to meet fascinating people from all over the world.
Nancy Keane
Provides ready-to-use booktalks, lists of recommended reading, book reviews by children and other information about children’s literature.
One State Many Nations
One State Many Nations is a website devoted to Ohio American Indian History. It is aligned with the Ohio state standards for education and provides teachers a pdf guide with worksheets for classroom use.
PBS Teachers
Provides a database of lesson plans searchable by grade level, subject, and keyword. Lesson plans incorporate online interactive activities, video, and audio.
Picture Book Database
A special database developed by the Children’s Library that enables a subject search of children’s picturebooks available at the library. Author and title search is also available. A good resource for themed activities.
Preschool Education.com
Provides activities, music, and ideas for the preschool teacher. Offers a music database to find songs and fingerplays by subject.
Resources for Early Childhood Educators
The Early Childhood Resource Lab is housed in the Children’s Library at the Main Library of the Akron-Summit County Public Library system. The lab is open during all library hours unless the space is needed for a library program. The Lab houses equipment for use by early childhood educators (preschool—grade 3) to create learning materials and other items for their classrooms. Equipment includes Ellison die cut machines, laminating machines, a binding machine, and more. A library card and initial orientation on equipment use and registration are required. Call 330-643-9050 to schedule an orientation.
The Educator’s Reference Desk
Collection of more than 2000 unique lesson plans written and submitted by teachers from all over the United States and the world. Searchable by subject, grade level, and keyword. Also provides access to GEM (Gateway to Educational Materials) which provides quick and easy access to over 40,000 educational resources found on various federal, state, university, non-profit and commercial Internet sites.

United Disability Services Toy and Resource Center
The Toy & Resource Center is a toy lending library that loans developmental toys and resource materials to anyone working with a child from birth to six years of age, whether he or she has special needs or is typically developing.
